Falmouth – An exhibition of color photographs by Falmouth photojournalist Dan Cutrona entitled “Carioca Color: Photographs of Rio de Janeiro” is on display at Falmouth Community TV’s Maser Gallery, 310 Dillingham Avenue, from May 4 through May 29, 2008. Opening reception: Sunday, May 4, 3 to 5 p.m.

Freelance-photographer Dan Cutrona describes his exhibition as a stylized look at Rio emphasizing the city’s color and rhythmic patterns. “Aside from a few shots, the show does not really focus on the people, but more so their environment. The Brazilian vitality can be seen through that colorful surrounding,” says Cutrona.

Cutrona began his career after showing his portfolio to the editor of the Sentinel and Enterprise, who gave him his first assignment at the age of 17. Simultaneously working at the newspaper, where he won awards from the New England Press Association, and attending Fitchburg State College, Cutrona learned his craft from professor Peter Laytin, whose mentor was the renowned photographer Minor White.

After receiving a degree in Communications and Photography, Cutrona interned with interior photographer Eric Roth who helped shaped his career in photography. Inspired to travel, Cutrona spent time in Italy documenting his experience. Returning home, he mounted an exhibition of fine art and travel photographs in his own photography gallery in Falmouth.

Cutrona continues to travel whenever time permits to add to his extensive stock libraries of Brazil and Italy. His work is frequently published in Cape Cod Life, Yankee Magazine, and Cape Cod Magazine, among other publications.

This is the first showing of Cutrona’s images of Brazil. “I have literally fallen in love with the people and culture of Brazil,” says Cutrona, whose father-in-law is a native of Rio de Janeiro. The exhibition “brings a little piece of Brazil to Cape Cod”, home to some 20,000 Brazilians.
