Cotuit Center for the Arts is pleased to announce our newest Gallery Exhibition: FIRE & SMOKE., featuring the works of three Cape Cod professional potters: Diane Heart, Ron Dean and Denny Howard. Using alternative firing techniques, each potter has developed their own unique way of capturing the impressions of fire and smoke in their handmade ceramic vessels. The common theme found in these artists’ works is the strong influence of the firing process in the finished pieces, including both the fire and the smoke.

The exhibit will feature the finished pieces of each potter, who between them have over 100 years of experience working with clay. Techniques used by these talented ceramicists include raku, pit firing, post-fire reduction, carbon trapping and vapor firing. In addition, the show will feature live outdoor demonstrations of the processes involved on Tuesday afternoons, including preparing and burnishing pots for firing, raku glazing and firing, and smoking and pit firing.
